Heroes for Life is a campaign promoting organ and tissue donation for transplants. It aims to inform and increase awareness about the life-changing importance of organ donations. Our goal is to have more donors every day, so people on the waiting list can get a transplant.
The number of people waiting for a transplant grows every day. In Mexico, more than 22,000 men, women and children are on the waiting list for a transplant. Each year, only 2,054 people receive transplants from dead donors, mainly due to a lack of available organs.
In Mexico, the number of organ donors is ten times less than in countries like Spain. Consequently, awareness about donations has to be increased so as to give more people the chance to live.
One person who donates his or her organs when they are no longer needed can save 7 or more lives.
As well as promoting a culture of organ donation, the Carlos Slim Foundation has a transplant aid program, through alliances with state governments, national health institutes, hospitals and NGO’s. Between 2001 and 2018 it has helped 9,635 people to benefit from transplants.
